KTM's other entry, the 250 XC, is actually designed for cross-country racing but makes a fairly good motocross bike, too. The XC is a direct offshoot of the moto-specific 250 SX, which has been well-liked by CW in previous years. Luckily for Vets, when the conversion to XC spec took place, an electric starter was added, along with an 18-inch rear wheel.
Though versatile and easy to ride, the XC was the slowest bike in the test. "The little KTM is the most fun to ride but not to race," said Doughty. "The motor is just not on par with the Japanese moto four-strokes."
On the plus side, the KTM has a nice open riding position especially suited to taller riders. Eastman gave the XC a final compliment, saying, "The KTM 250 offers a level of approachability that outshines all the other bikes we rode. If all you wanted to do was play-ride at your local moto track, this is a solid choice."
